If you’ve come across Tomi Thomas’ art in any shape or form, you’d acknowledge that he possesses artistry that’s so rare in these parts. He might just be bubbling just under the surface of mainstream consciousness and dominance waiting for that perfect moment to breakout, but Tomi Thomas’ skill set isn’t one that can be denied as he brings something different but soul-stirring to the table. And his latest single, ‘Hopeless Romantic’ isn’t any different. For this record, he brings along his guitar to work with T.U.C who produced and engineered the record. Abdourin Opeyemi Jacob also contributes guitar riffs to the tune.
‘Hopeless Romantic’ is an Afrobeats tune with a dominant dancehall feel that finds Tomi Thomas soliloquizing or talking to his diary (if he has one). “So many days on my own/ No credit on my phone/ I’m just a hopeless romantic…” he croons.
This record comes months after Tomi Thomas teamed up with GMK on ‘Lagos (every day)’ which is a meditation on the dominant hustle culture which exists in the city it is titled after. This is one of the outstanding traits that separates Lagos from several other cities across the country. And even though the city is Nigeria’s financial capital, poverty is very much extensive even in the midst of plenty.
