It’s always amazing to see how far Tems has come over the past year. With just three singles under her belt as well as a handful of features, she already sits as of Nigeria’s most promising stars. The soul-stirring singer stole the heart of Nigerians with her ode to an erring lover ‘Mr Rebel’ and ‘Looku Looku’ which made many keep tabs on her progress. She then followed this up with her empowering anthem ‘Try Me’ that vaulted her to a new level of mainstream awareness. By the end of 2019, Tems was already a household name. And ever since ‘Try Me’, she has been on a streak of stellar guest appearances with SDC, Lady Donli, Odunsi and most recently Khalid on ‘Know Your Worth’ with Davido.
Well, the 2-time Headies winner is back with a surprise release, one she describes as “a gift to the gang.” Titled ‘These Days’, this 2020 debut finds her going back to her introspective self, reflecting on her love story which hasn’t exactly been a trip to Disneyland. As she sings “I Knew, you knew that you were never humble,” you can tell she saw the signs from afar but ignored it and now she’s paying the price. “And these days are made from the pain/ These nights are not full of stars,” she sings in the chorus.
But all hope is not lost. Things are just sour, not rotten. There’s still a shot at redemption. “Can you please make up your mind yeah/ cause you’re running out of options” she warns. Tems wants reassurances, but a half-assed one as she demands “tell me that you’ll feel again/ You’ll be with me to the grave.”
