Khalid threw Nigerians into an orgy of celebration when he announced an Afropop rendition of his latest single ‘Know Your Worth’ with Davido and Tems. The original produced by Disclosure had Khalid preaching self-worth on a soft electronic production. But with this new version, Khalid finds himself exploring the percussive Afropop sound which has been penetrating the global music market.
As the title implies, ‘Know Your Worth’ is a reminder not to settle for less. It carries a reflective tone, nudging you to reevaluate yourself and your relationships — romantic or platonic. ” Find someone you know will put you first/ Find someone who loves you at your worst,” the chorus sings.
Davido softly delivers his verse woven in pidgin, Yoruba and English, launching probing questions to help put the relationship into perspective. “Are you happy?” he ultimately asks. But Tems, with her thrilling voice, takes the shine. Her short but sweet verse is a heartfelt one that drives you to “find yourself a real thing/ find yourself a new thing.”
It’s always amazing to see how far Tems has come over the past year. With just three singles under her belt and a handful of features, she already sits as of Nigeria’s most promising stars. And with this Khalid feature thrusting her into the American music space, she might just be on a thrill-ride to stardom.
