DRB Lasgidi’s Long-Overdue Debut Album “Pioneers” Is Finally Here

The alté movement has been a strong force in shaping the Nigerian music, art, and fashion spaces for the past couple of years. From Odunsi the Engine to Santi, Wavy The Creator, Lady Donli, and many others, the movement has been a strong force in shaping and redefining how Nigerian music is perceived all over the world. But “alté”, owes a lot of its roots to DRB Lasgidi, a collective made up of Teezee, Fresh L, and the serial feature-killer, BOJ.

Today, the trio releases their long-awaited debut album, “Pioneers.” and reaffirms their pertinent role in the founding of the culture-shifting movement.

Speaking about the album in a recent interview with Native mag, they express that “as you develop yourself as a person, and if you care about your craft and what you’re doing, you realise that there are some certain things you need to do to get things done. Life happens and you become forced to take things more seriously. When you get to adulthood, you have to be forced to translate your passion into bar.”

As leaders of the new school, they bring along an all-star àlte cast of Santi, Tems, Lady Donli, Prettyboy D-O, Wani, and more on the 12-track album. The project also features an appearance from street generalissimo, Olamide who guested on ‘Shomo’ one of the lead singles off the album.

The album is credited with production works from an array of skilled producers such as Pheelz, Adey, Genio, Higo, and the Beatmeister himself, GMK.

One thing that strikes you as you try to give “Pioneers” a spin is its eccentric cover art. The Basquiat-esque album art titled Midnight Friends is designed by Nigerian visual artist Anedu Edozien. A perfect fit for the iconic album, it portrays the community, style, creativity, and the rebelliousness of Lagos youth culture.

This album comes highly recommended from us at The PGM Club.
