Boj teleports us to his Lagos hometown inspiring his bohemian music in Gbagada Express

Gbagada Express has been highly anticipated since the singer announced its arrival on his social media platforms. This will be his fourth album and with this, he teleports us to Gbagada, his hometown district in Lagos. Fluctuating between London and Lagos his adult life, Gbagada provided an encouraging environment for Boj’s bohemian music which at first was considered too edgy to become commercial but is now becoming the new face of the Industry with so many Afrofusion artists redefining Afrobeats with their experimentations.

Already giving us hints with In a Loop and Culture, Gbagada Express promised to be a consortium of resounding auditory sensations. The 16 tracks Owo Ni Koko, Tinu Ewe, Lekki Love, Awolowo, Confam, Get Out The Way, In A Loop, Yarning Many, Emotions, Culture, Unconsciously, Money and Laughter, Abracadabra, Action Boyz, Gbagada Express and finally Your Love (Mogbe) do not disappoint one bit. But then again, what’s to be expected from one of the pioneers of Alternative music in Nigeria. This is his turf and he sure knows how to work it. Gbagada Express is a rich potpourri of soulful artistic expressions. Right from his debut album BOTM (2014), Boj continues to spread the excellence that spilt into his previous projects BOTM Deluxe (2016) and Magic (2017) and now flows to his latest.

Another contribution to the brilliance of the album is the star-studded collaborations. It has on it inputs from talented powerhouses like Fireboy DML, Shaybo, Buju, Fresh L, Wizkid, Darkovibes, Pretty Boy D-O, Kofi Jamar, Joey B, Moliy, Melissa, Teezee, Enny, Victony, Amaarae, Zamir, Davido, Mr Eazi, Obongjayar and Tiwa Savage. BOJ singing on the track with his features felt like listening to a harmonious syndicate of armed robbers’ work. Their prize? Our hearts. The features blended well and felt very natural. The meticulous selection this must have taken can be felt.

I dare say this is one of the best, if not the best album out of Nigeria this year. To skip this masterpiece of sonic resonance will be a great disservice to yourself.
