BarelyAnyHook Is On Full G.R.R Martin Mode On His ‘Dangote’ Cover Titled ‘Tempest’

In celebration of his 27th birthday, burgeoning rapper, BarelyAnyHook has released what he refers to as a ‘party pack’, a cover of Burna Boy‘s 2019 smash, ‘Dangote‘. This is a hookless cover where BarelyAnyHook brilliantly showcases his lyricism and an airtight delivery over the laidback instrumental of the raving hustler’s anthem.

The introspective verse, replete with Game Of Thrones references possesses a soulful realness to it. As he touches on his week-old GidiFest performance and metaphorically reflects on his artistry as well as some of the lessons learnt over the years. He also reminds us of his forthcoming “Barely.Big.Enough” project which is scheduled for release in “a month and some change“.

As he revealed on Twitter, this might just be the first instalment in a series of Game Of Thrones-themed releases scheduled for May. However, you can enjoy this freestyle alongside his other singles like ‘Line Up‘, ‘Vibrations Clearly‘ and ‘Lava Lamp‘ with Sute.

Bigfootinyourface Teams Up With Akym Aremu On New Melancholic Single ‘The Journey’

2019 has been a really busy year for Bigfootinyourface. The year which has seen just four months has seen the multi-talented producer release a joint EP “Vita.Amare.Libidine” with Kel as well as executive produce Pasha‘s “Love, Sex & Loud“. He has also released a string of singles working with acts like Monseeka, Jemal, Maka ,IllBliss and others. In fact, it is safe to say that Bigfoot is living up to his name because he has been all up in our faces with quality releases all year long. And let’s not forget that he was one of the DJs at our our This Is Hip-Hop event which held earlier this month at The Harvest.

And now, in the spirit of his Downtempo Fridays, Bigfoot has released the seventh installment of the weekly series titled ‘The Journey‘ featuring Akym Aremu. This comes after the raving ‘Nkali‘ with the hip-hop veteran, IllBliss.

With a run time of about three minutes, record opens with a piercing guitar riff which precedes Akym Aremu’s melancholic but though provoking verse which details some of the struggles and harsh realities of many Nigerians as he rhetorically asks in Yoruba where we are all headed.

BOJ Links Up With Ghana’s Finest On ‘Awolowo’ With Joey B, Kwesi Arthur & Drako Vibes

One of Nigeria’s finest hook killers, BOJ, has teamed up with an all-star cast of young, talented and vibrant acts across Nigeria and Ghana to produce his latest offering titled ‘Awolowo‘. This new single is named after late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s most iconic politicians credited with introducing free primary education and health care in the Western region of the country.

Produced by the acclaimed ‘alte playmaker’, GMK, BOJ recruits a team of Ghana’s finest acts Kwesi Arthur, Darko Vibes and Joey B who did not fail to bring an international flavour to the scintillating jam. The song also features additional vocals by Zamir and guitar by friend-of-the-family, Tomi Thomas.

Awolowo‘ is BOJ’s first release since he paired up with the self-acclaimed ‘sugar mummy’, Teni the Entertainer on ‘Obe‘ in January. One of the first things that would catch you about this record is how the faces of this young acts-pushing the limits of their crafts in their respective countries- replace the face of Nigeria’s revered politician, Awolowo, on the 100 Naira note issued by the “Alte Bank Of Africa“. However, he is not totally out of the picture as his face can be seen beside Ghana’s most respected political figure, Kwame Nkrumah at the top left corner of the cover art.

The song itself even does much more justice to the memory of the legend as BOJ is on full alchemist mode as he delivers a chilled golden hook with his gruff voice over the simplistic but dazzling GMK-production. Kwesi Arthur, Joey B and Darko Vibes also did not disappoint as they deliver their impressive 16s in English, pidgin and their native languages’.

Join Johnny Drille In His Search On ‘Finding Efe’

Nigerian alternative sensation, Johnny Drille has released a new single, titled ‘Finding Efe‘, his third single in 2019, after opening the year with the dual release of ‘Forever’ and ‘Shine’ which many cant seem to get enough of. He also made an appearance on Ladipoe‘s latest single ‘Jaiye‘ which has been gaining traction on the airwaves.

This single is actually the product of a real life experience, which Johnny Drille shared on his Twitter about two days ago, about a girl he met briefly in Benin but he missed out on his chance to get her contact.

On this new self-produced record, Johnny Drille is a shy secret admirer who timidly missed out on his chance to express himself to Efe (as implied by the title) and has therefore been looking for her ever since. He has made several futile efforts just to reach out to her and this song seems to be his last hope of reaching out to her. As expected with Johnny Drille’s songs, this record is highly rich in instrumentation and a vivid imagery.

The video opens with Johnny Drille, a photographer, packing his bags and getting in his ride for a long search for his crush. He goes around with a Polaroid picture in hand trying to locate Efe. The beautiful video is directed by Timmy Davies.

Prettyboy D-O has unveiled the highly cinematic visuals to ‘Pull Up’ featuring Santi. This is one of the standout tracks off his debut mixtape “Everything Pretty”. This video directed by Demola is a very energetic one that matches the ferocity of the record.

This dark, gritty, and energetic video has spurred conversations on social media with many trying to still understand the somewhat elusive alte and their creative process and artistry. Due to the intensity of the video, a number of people picked up where they left off with Santa’s video for Rapid Fire, referring to the alte as just a front for a cult group.

Kida Kudz Presents New Trippy Tune ‘Jiggy Bop’

UK-based Nigerian act, Kida Kudz has released a new jam titled ‘Jiggy Bop’ which was earlier  premiered on Beat 1 Radio with Julie Adenuga. Over a very trippy but minimalist instrumental a relaxed and reflective  Kida Kudz just delivers a performance that makes this record sound different from what he has been putting out lately.

 

The song opens with a piercing but soothing flute riff which remains the dominaierring sound throughout the record, such that it sticks in your head right from your first listen.  Enjoy this slow jam.

Bella Alubo Releases Lyric Video for ‘Ask Bolaji’ Featuring BOJ

Burgeoning sensation, Bella Alubo has unveiled the lyric video for her banging single in which she joins forces with BOJ titled  ‘Ask Bolaji’, one of the standout cuts from her latest EP “re-Bella” which was released in December last year.

 

This song finds Bella in her bad-girl persona as she delivers as electric performance over a banging and dazzling production. BOJ himself matches her energy as he brings his ever-present Midas touch to the smash with so much hit-potential.

 

The lyric video just shows the animated images of both Bella and BOJ on the sides with the lyrics flashing in between them.

 

Blaqbonez Takes It A Step Further On “Bad Boy Blaq – Re-Up”

Blaqbonez struck gold in 2018. The burgeoning rap sensation has been tirelessly putting in work ever since the release of his mixtape “HipHop In Blaq” in 2013, such that hardly has a year gone by without him releasing a body of work. However, despite the quality of these releases, they were not enough to shed him off the “underground rapper” tag; not until last year when things started to turn around.

 Backed by 100 Crowns and Chocolate City, his debut album, “Bad Boy Blaq”, propelled him into mainstream consciousness. The final project of the game-changing 2018 LAMB August rollout is an experimental and deeply fascinating “Bad Boy Blaq,” which gave Blaqbonez the mainstream acceptance and recognition that had eluded him for years. With the album, he established a foothold in the industry as one of the most talented rap artist rising through the ranks.

Now, barely five months after the release of the breakout album, Blaqbonez is treating us to a follow-up project titled the “Bad Boy Blaq Re-UP.” And as the title implies, this project is built on the successes of its immediate predecessor.

It is not a Part II. It was just due to the fact that we did a lot with the original project, it almost got there but there was like a little bit extra we could do to get it over the line, which is why I worked on the re-up.” He explains in an interview with Pulse.

Ever since the release of the last album, Blaqbonez has continued to maintain a high level of fan-engagement on social media with tweets, hilarious video clips and hot takes on trending issues. As a result, Blaqbonez can boast of one of the most organic, dedicated, and ever-growing cult-following among the young acts today and perhaps the best for hip-hop at the moment.

Blaqbonez may not be popping as much on the streets but mans is pulling quite impressive numbers on the streaming platforms. And now, the release of the Re-Up seems to be Blaq’s latest strategy at maintaining and optimizing his audience retention especially given the short attention span albums are given these days.

The Re-up contains a hazy mix of fresh cuts and remixes of some of the Bad Boy Blaq‘s standout records. Blaqbonez enlists the efforts of an all-star cast of young gifted acts who help to provide several moments of brilliance on the project and also helping the remixed cuts to have a refreshing feel.

The project is arranged in such a way that the remixes off  “Bad Boy Blaq”, come right in between the new songs. This provides a sense of familiarity while listening to the project such that it’s new but doesn’t feel so new. Also, the remixes maintained the exact order by which they appear on the album.

All but two tracks feature guest verses. On the opener and the final track of the project which also happen to be the most personal cuts on the project, Blaq is a lone ranger bringing it all to bear on the records. Both songs are polar opposites, reflecting two different sides of the pink-haired rapper. On ‘No Longer Stupid‘, Blaq is introspective, apologetic and appreciative all in the same breath. Through a reminiscent style of detailing, he recognises how far he has come in the industry and acknowledges the naive mistakes he made on the come up. Acknowledging his growth in several factors, Blaqbonez also appreciates some of those who helped set him straight and those who still showed him loved despite him doing them wrong.

On the flip side, ‘Bxtch’ finds a stone-faced Blaq coming all out at his prior detractors and doubters. On the second verse, he had some not-so-subtle jabs for who many have perceived to be Yung6ix. Although he does not name-drop the rapper, with lines like Somebody stole your lines, okay/Somebody stole your shine, I did it/ Guess Somebody stole your balls/Cos you ain had the guts to try be specific he might as well have as all fingers point to Yung6ix following his reaction to the LAMB Martell Cypher.

Another side of Blaqbonez, the comical and playful one that is hard to miss on his social media pages these days comes to bear on the track ‘Good Boy’. On the tongue-in-cheek anthem for the “nice” guys, Blaq makes up for his limited signing talents by recruiting the efforts of BOJ and CKay who didn’t fail to deliver intoxicating performances. Despite his voice sounding raspy, Blaq also delivers an infectious sing-along chorus that makes record one of the standouts of the project. The playful Blaqbonez also shows up in brief moments in tracks like Denied and Play Remix.

Blaqbonez has come a long way. It’s undeniable that Blaqbonez raw talents are fast being forged into shining diamonds.  He has proven himself time and again as one of the most talented and promising rap artists rising the ranks with a solid and enviable fanbase and this tape is a solid addition to his catalogue. In fact, he is just a hit single short of being a household name.

The “Re-up” might have been birthed from “Bad boy Blaq“, but it breathes a life of its own. The short and sweet project is a showcase of his level of talent and versatility and also a promise of better things to come.
