Burna Boy’s Independence Day Present Comes A Day Early As He Releases Visuals For ‘Another Story’

In the wake of our Independence day celebration tomorrow, the self-acclaimed African Giant, Burna Boy, has decided to remind us of our realities as Nigerians as he releases a fitting visual for ‘Another Story‘, one of the stand-out cuts off his culturally and commercially successful album, “African Giant.” Teaming up with one of Ghana’s finest rapper, M.anifest, the pair provides insightful social commentary on this reflective record as they take turns to lament about the ills of their respective societies.

The Clarence Peters-directed satiric video finds a cross-section of Nigerians in a classroom, blinded by several vices that have haunted us since independence and led us to the trenches we find ourselves today. It also touches on the unrests that have become strife in Nigeria and our neighbours, Ghana, as the guest, M.anifest delievers his pensive verse in a make-shift traffic jam. The video also opens and closes with brief history lessons on the emergence of the geopolitical entity called Nigeria, specifically reminding us that, “if you don’t know where you’re coming from, you won’t know where you are going.”

As we celebrate Nigeria’s 59th independence day tomorrow, the well-timed video should be sufficient to remind us that October 1st should really be a day of deep reflection of how we got here as a nation.

Vector Comes For M.I Yet Again On ‘Tetracycling’ Freestyle

Exactly a week after teaming up with Vader the Wildcard and Payper Corleone to reply the L.A.MB Martell Cypher 2 on ‘The Purge‘, Vector tha Viper has released yet another diss track for M.I Abaga titled ‘Tetracycling‘.

This comes as a surprise to many as they expected that the next voice in this battle would be M.I’s, aiming the kill shot at Vector with his reply for ‘The Purge‘. But Vector doesn’t seem to be done yet. Over this freestyle he tags a “warning shot”, he takes direct shots at the former Chocolate City boss hoping to strike the deathblow.

With this back-to-back diss, it feels like an M.I reply is imminent, because, hip-hop is quite unforgiving to those perceived as craven. But M.I is never one to run from a fight so I guess it’s just a matter of time.

Listen to this new diss track and tell us if this is a hit or miss.

BOJ Teams Up With Tiwa Savage On ‘Your Love (Mogbe)’

One-third of the alte-pi0neering DRB Lasgidi, BOJ has tapped Tiwa Savage for his latest release titled ‘Your Love (Mogbe)‘. This continues Boj’s string of team-ups having worked with Teni, Falz, Fresh L, Kwesi Arthur, Joey B, Darko Vibes and Ycee in his previous 2019 releases. The song was premiered yesterday evening on Ebro Darden‘s show on Beats1 Radio.

Over the laid back record, both acts profess their love for one another. They both detail how well they admire and each other, also reminding themselves of their hopelessness if they decide to leave each other. With a very catchy sing-along hook, the song peaks at its final moments when Boh’s gruff voice synergizes with Tiwa’s syrupy vocals, making you fumble immediately for the repeat button.

This is a song that would be best enjoyed in the silent nights spent in your lover’s arms while slightly intoxicated. And this weekend appears to be the best time for such.

Adekunle Gold Is Girl-Crazy About His Love Interest In ‘Young Love’

Ace alternative singer, Adekunle Gold has released a new single, ‘Young Love‘, off his coming project “Afropop Vol.1” which is scheduled for release later this year. This comes just a couple of months after his experimental ‘Kelegbe Megbe‘ where he warns off detractors to remain in their level.

Just like ‘Before You Wake Up‘ and ‘Kelegbe Megbe‘ before it, ‘Young Love‘ finds Adekunle Gold pushing new frontiers with sound, which is steps away from his signature alternative folk sound. On this Sess-produced record, the singer is in love all over again as he worships his love interest. He admits that although the love is still nascent and might not be deeply rooted but he is ready to fly with it. He is deeply intoxicated by the euphoric feeling, singing “If I Pass out, will you wake me with more love?

With his recent releases, Adekunle Gold is gradually unveiling layers to his personality and sound that we never knew existed and to be honest, it is very exciting to watch. And going by the title of the coming project, “Afro Pop,” it seems we might be in for more.

Oma Mahmud’s ‘Jalo’ With Lady Donli is a Call to Rethink the Nigerian Exodus

Oma Mahmud wants us to have tough conversations. Conversations we often shy away from especially through our escapist music about the allures and pull of luxury and excesses in a country that has become the poverty capital of the world. Over his next string of releases, the eccentric act, Oma Mahmud, seeks to undertake an enquiry into the state of the nation. And he kicks things right off with a Lady Donli assist on ‘Jalo‘, the first single from his next album aptly titled, “State of the Nation.”

Jalo‘ is also his first official release since his last album “Rockstvr,” an 11-track project released earlier this year, that guests new wave acts like DJ Yin, Prettyboy D-O, Damayo, Yung L and more.

On the self-produced record, Oma Mahmud and Lady Donli are united in crooning over the appalling socio-political state of the nation as well as the migration-centred orientation of its youths. Many have sadly given up on the deteriorating country and see migration to the West as the only viable shot at a better life. In plain street lingo, everyone simply wants to ‘japa‘.

However, the pair are sceptical of this exodus-is-a-must mindset – “Who go remain for we country o, if to say me and you we dey plan to go?” Mahmud rhetorically asks as he opens the record.

Sonically, ‘Jalo‘ is an afrobeat record highly rich in instrumentation, particularly with its heavy bassline and guitar loops. With a call-and-response chorus common in the message-laden genre, both acts come through with their reflective and pensive verses without being overbearing. The song is co-written by Ayomide Olufawo who also contributed background vocals to the beautiful record.

Enjoy the record and let us know if you agree with Oma Mahmud and Lady Donli.

Amaarae Muses Over Her Erring Lover In ‘Like It’

Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Amaarae has released a new single titled ‘Like It‘, which comes just a few months after the Wande Coal-assisted ‘Spend Some Time‘. According to her, this song would be her last release of 2019, as she is devoting the rest of the year to work on her coming full-length project.

This single was premiered yesterday on the PGM Radio Show with Douglas Jekan, Eri Ife and Oma Mahmud.

Like It‘ is a mid-tempo love number with a scintillating ambient guitar loop, over which the soft-voiced Amaarae romantically muses over her lover. She declares that she is hopelessly in love and is ready to do whatever for her sweetheart who has been astray of late. Over the dreamy hook, she queries her lover if her desires and fantasies are mutual. This song is engineered by a competent duo of Mikemillz and Rvdical the Kid, who also produced the record.

The accompanying video finds Amaarae taking a tour in a funhouse named The Lost Motel with rooms of varying degrees of amusements. Led by imp-sized tour guides, first room finds the singer soaking up the weird glee of a grotesque strip club. Still looking lost, she finds herself strange-looking birthday party with clowns, balloons and polaroid pictures. The video is directed by David Nicol Sey and produced by Fotombo.

Speaking about the video in a recent interview with More Branches, she revealed that “We wanted to take the viewer on a trip. Throughout the video, you see the main character chasing after something but we don’t know what it is. I don’t even think she knows what it is but she’s intrigued and she needs to follow her instincts. The goal between all the creatives involved was the character needed to be in a space where they were willing to forego their need for power and control. The mission was to communicate to the viewer that now is the time to let go. Allow your desires to lead — you don’t know where you will end up but it’s worth the risk.
