7 female musicians. 10 tracks. 1 crazy producer. When we first heard about Bankyondbeatz’s concept for Fuego Senoras, Spanish for Fire Ladies, we were intrigued by not only the gender equalizing theme but also the range and depth of talent featured on the EP.
It kicks off with “New Things” where Muna alternates between rapping and singing over a smooth and soothing piano and percussive beat. Eli’s soft and tender vocals are the perfect complement to the light instrumental on “Come Through”, a beautiful love song and one of the standout tracks off the project.
On “Fale Comigo”, Banky teams up with Lady Donli in creating a mid-tempo jazz styled groove with a light trap feel that is simply a brilliant fusion of so many different sounds.
“Hearts” Desire featuring DJ Yin is another instant favorite with its heavy pana-inspired snares and Yin’s mature and controlled vocals.
“Takeover” and ‘Ago Alago” featuring Deena O and Niniola respectively depart from the overall sound of the project up to now with Deena flowing off the Caribbean vibe on “Takeover” and Niniola telling a cautionary tale of patience on “Ago Alago”.
The penultimate track on the EP is “Pensive” featuring budding femcee A.T. Her fast paced patois-laced rap style and Banky’s production weave seamlessly into an intricate story that, although personal to A.T, can easily be the soundtrack to the mind state of the average Nigerian lost in a hustle.
Usually with this many features and guest appearances on a project it can be very difficult for a unique identity to be formed but the variety and interesting fusion of the Bankyondbeatz’s production matched by strong guest appearances from Lady Donli, DJ Yin, Eli and A.T elevate it and give it a cohesive mix that makes the EP more than just a sum of its parts.
This project has us very excited at the pgm club. We earnestly look forward to more music from Bankyondbeatz.
