Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Amaarae has released a new single titled ‘Like It‘, which comes just a few months after the Wande Coal-assisted ‘Spend Some Time‘. According to her, this song would be her last release of 2019, as she is devoting the rest of the year to work on her coming full-length project.
This single was premiered yesterday on the PGM Radio Show with Douglas Jekan, Eri Ife and Oma Mahmud.
‘Like It‘ is a mid-tempo love number with a scintillating ambient guitar loop, over which the soft-voiced Amaarae romantically muses over her lover. She declares that she is hopelessly in love and is ready to do whatever for her sweetheart who has been astray of late. Over the dreamy hook, she queries her lover if her desires and fantasies are mutual. This song is engineered by a competent duo of Mikemillz and Rvdical the Kid, who also produced the record.
The accompanying video finds Amaarae taking a tour in a funhouse named The Lost Motel with rooms of varying degrees of amusements. Led by imp-sized tour guides, first room finds the singer soaking up the weird glee of a grotesque strip club. Still looking lost, she finds herself strange-looking birthday party with clowns, balloons and polaroid pictures. The video is directed by David Nicol Sey and produced by Fotombo.
Speaking about the video in a recent interview with More Branches, she revealed that “We wanted to take the viewer on a trip. Throughout the video, you see the main character chasing after something but we don’t know what it is. I don’t even think she knows what it is but she’s intrigued and she needs to follow her instincts. The goal between all the creatives involved was the character needed to be in a space where they were willing to forego their need for power and control. The mission was to communicate to the viewer that now is the time to let go. Allow your desires to lead — you don’t know where you will end up but it’s worth the risk.“
